Life is A Game; So Play It Well

I think life is a big game we play ~ Eric Cantona

"I'm done. With everything, but mostly with life."

"Oh?" I asked.

"I just don't get the point anymore. Life is just a stupid game."

"But ... that's the point. Only, to play the game well."

My cynical friend stared at me, then let his eyes roll, obviously not impressed by my making light of his having made fun of life.

If he'd just listened to me for a moment longer, I would have said something of substance. Instead he walked away from me and right off the edge of a cliff, ending his game of life forever.

Life is a song - sing it. Life is a game - play it. Life is a challenge - meet it. Life is a dream - realize it. Life is a sacrifice - offer it. Life is love - enjoy it ~ Sai Baba

As a want-to-be distinguished chess lover and player, I strongly believe that life is the greatest game and that many people under appreciate this.

Or run away from the fact, as if life being merely a game to be played is a horrible notion. Instead, humanity would rather pretend the game doesn't exist. And so, we have people hiding behind paper and screens, choosing to believe that they don't have a role to play on this vast game board called Earth.

Life is a game. Money is how we keep score ~ Ted Turner

"Life should be predictable. Living is serious business," my friend had always said while he still lived. "Life shouldn't be so ..."

His words to describe what life shouldn't be always changed. Sometimes he'd say life shouldn't be so flippant. Sometime's he'd say it should be more easy going. Once he said life ought to be easier. Then another time he said life was too boring; not challenging enough.

Me? I've always viewed life just as my friend did, but in a positive light. Because I love games.

Life is a game and true love is a trophy ~ Rufus Wainwright

My friend viewed everything as a game. Church with its rote proverbs and ritualistic activities. Careers with their need to create more income to feed growing bills. Days with their dreams of sleeping and nights with their nightmares of failing.

To him everything was unreal because everything was a game.

But games have destinations, and so, to me, games are what make life real.

You know ... life can be like a big game of Battleship. The enemy knows where your ships are and is trying to call the right number and sink them. But he can't sink you if you're with God ~ Bob Goff

I think my friend saw life as Yahtzee—the dice were rolled and he had to go where ever they fell. Except, he believed that they who were tossing the dice determined just how his dice would roll. So, not only was his life a game of dice and he never had a turn to toss a die, it was also a game of dice that involved cheating.

I view life as a game of chess. Sure, there might be some cheating. But I still have my own side of the board to worry about. And if I use my brains, I can incorporate strategy to my advantage that defeats the other no matter how much underhand trickery is at play.

Yes, I agree with my friend that life is a game. But I don't think of this as a bad thing. Because all great things, like life, are hard and fun because of those hardships.

That's when I make a list in my head of every act of goodness I've seen someone do. It's like a game. Repetitive. Even a little tedious after more than twenty years. But there are much worse games to play ~ Last line in "Mockingjay" by Suzanne Collins

I've heard some say "Life isn't a game, ya know."

As if there mere idea of life being a game takes away from the seriousness of life. Or that games are childish and immature. But those sort of people don't understand that games aren't all fun and frivolity.

Games are hard and fun, and without a game ... you just have a pile of useless pieces and a drab playing board.

Games are complexity with purpose.
Games are purpose with plans.

Without a game plan, life is but a passing vapor.
And without joy, life is but a sorrow; pitiful and dull.

A voice says, “Cry!” And I said, “What shall I cry?” All flesh is grass, and all its beauty is like the flower of the field. The grass withers, the flower fades when the breath of the Lord blows on it; surely the people are grass. The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever Isaiah 40:6-8

It's no simple matter playing the greatest of all games: Life.

Imagination and purpose must fuel our every move. And our end-goal is what makes each play worthwhile and meaningful. Games take effort and demand strategy and passion.

Games are not easy, true, but I still don't see why one would use it as a negative connotation when talking of life. Games are fun, and they give us a path toward possible victory.

My days are swifter than a weaver's shuttle and come to their end without hope Job 7:6

Just don't jump off any cliffs. Because losing is not an adventure. And falling doesn't feel so good, or so I have come to believe from the way my friend screamed in his last moments.

The greatest games are lived well. The greatest lives are played fully.

All you have to do is know the rules and play the game well.

Stop saying life is a joke. It's not. Jokes have meaning ~ Unknown

Happy living and may you win!

*I can't decide if I just wrote satire, or if I'm serious. I'll let you decide in the comments.

  1. A game implies competition. It also implies a predetermined set of rules, boundaries, and goals. So, if life is a game, we're definitely not all on the same board.

    1. I'm gonna agree by disagreeing .... one could say that there are a set of predetermined rules and boundaries set by God, and even goals. And that the board game is Earth (or life, if you will). And that the competition is the reward we gain at the end of life. Not necessarily something we get at the cost of another losing, but there is certainly something to be lost if we don't "win the game". But even then ... life involves some competition, especially if you're a capitalist.

    2. Yes, "board" wasn't the right term to use. Because we're all on the same board of Earth. Perhaps you could say if life is a game, we're not all using the same set of directions.

    3. Hahaha I like that .. maybe some are using different editions, amended or edited. Or simply they are cheating ;)

  2. I always loved that Hunger Games quote.
I like the idea of it being a chess game, with a bit of cheating. XD

    1. It's such a great quote. I'll admit, I'm rather against cheating. But it's still a fun thought ;) Bending the rules, especially if they are ridiculous man-made rules CAN be good for the soul.

  3. Life can be a lot like a game, but not just any game. :)

    1. Very good point. Some games just aren't worth playing and some things just aren't worth living through or even for ;)

  4. Satire or not, I really liked this post! You've given me some things to think about.

Oh, and you like chess? Man, we should totally play some time! ;)

  5. This was a fascinating and thought provoking post whether it's satire or not... I don't know what to think of it other than this is going to stick with me all day now as I figure out what I think of considering life as a game. Right off the bat my first instinct is to feel unsettled by that. I don't know if I like to consider life any sort of game... But on the other hand I can see how life can be considered a game sometimes or all the time.

Living Like The Amish: Interviews With Three "English" Families PART I

Many people are obsessed with the Amish. I know at one time I was as well, and to a degree I still am. But my perception  has changed with experience. It started a long time ago when my family went to an Amish-held auction (no, it's not a place where you can buy Amish children, but a place where you can buy things from the Amish). I was eleven years old and enthralled to be surrounded by so many Amish. I loved the cockscomb flowers they sold everywhere. I bought a whole box for $2 and dried them for seeds so I could plant my own. But then I experienced my first reality shock concerning the Amish. I had assumed since they lived a simpler life everything about them was completely old-fashioned and natural. Imagine my horror when I saw Amish walking around with soda cans and store-bought ice cream. " Mom ," I said. "He's drinking soda!"  Left to right, back row: Jonny, Jonathan (Dad). Front row: Jacob, Keturah, Rebekah (Mom), Jonah (on Mom's

Peace During Patience

“Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.” - Philippians 4:6 My family and I were sitting around the breakfast table several months ago. Mom had just read this verse. One of the kids laughed incredulously, “What is it saying? Be careful for nothing – live recklessly?” “No,” I answered quickly. My tone was very matter-of-fact, blunt, as if I were all-knowing. “It means do not worry.” The kids all nodded among themselves and life continued on for them. But for me life paused at my words. I had heard this verse soooooooo many times. I had always known what it meant. But now? Now it really meant something . “Do not worry.” This path I've chosen. I can not see it. I can not feel it. I do not know where I am. I have chosen to follow God, and no other. But why did He hide the light from my eyes? I must take a step forward. But I do not want to. How long w

Inside The Land Of The Free

Hello. My name is Greg.  I have a lot of time to think. Too much time. Sometimes I think about my life - why I am sitting in prison. I wonder what I could have done different - my life plays before my eyes. "If only..." But even I know that no amount of good works would have stopped tyranny from finding fault with me. It is cold. My clothes are thin. My stomach is empty - occasionally filled with food of no sustenance.  I hide my face in my knees - as if that will somehow protect me from the horrors of this dark cold dungeon.  They keep it cold to freeze me, this I know. It is a part of their game - to drive a lesson into me. As if I have a lesson to learn solely because I was convicted. Convicted, but not  guilty. Years.  68 years for standing against injustice. How many years have I sat in here? I have forgot. All I know is this question, "Was I fated for this? Did God grant my birth
